1. Dartmouth
Art Weekend

This Saturday and Sunday 23
and 24 June 2007 10.00am until 4.00pm in aid of Children's
Hospice South West
Sue Tweed reports: As in previous years, we have around 30
artists, sculptors, photographers and other artists, displaying
their talents in gazebos in Royal Avenue Gardens in Dartmouth so
that the public can watch, and talk to, the artists while they
work. We will also have some fun children's activities, and good
homemade food in Royal Avenue Gardens, served by the Children’s
Hospice volunteers.
Why not come down this
weekend, the sun is hot, the beer is cold and the Piemonte is
chilled, as are we! For self catering

Mayoral Divisions

The Mayor of Dartmouth, Cllr Iris Pritchard joined Commodore
Martin Alabaster, Commanding Officer of BRNC to take the salute
and inspect the young officers at the Mayoral Divisions 'Passing
in and Passing Out Parade'. Also present were town
councillors and other VIPs, including the Town's Honoured
Citizens, Beryl Calder and Irene Scawn, shown top right with
their host officer for the day. The flypast by a Tornado
from RAF Marham took everyone by surprise!
3 .
Nigel Way MBE

Nigel Way shown here at 'The Palace' having got his 'just
desserts' last week, a well deserved MBE!

Nigel is the first major sponsor of this new Christmas event,
'Candlelit Dartmouth', thanks Nigel!
On Wednesday 13th June Nigel Way received his MBE from the Queen
at Buckingham Palace, for services to tourism and
hospitality. He said "It was the most memorable day of my
life; I was totally overwhelmed by the magnificence of
Buckingham Palace. The Queen was amazing - at 81 years old
she stood smiling for an hour and a half and talked to every one
of the recipients."
4. Ladies’ Lunch Club
A new Ladies’ Lunch Club has been
added to the menu at Dart Marina, Dartmouth. Superb Devon
produce, served in the relaxed, waterside setting of the River
Restaurant - a fabulous way to spend an hour or two in good
company. After a delicious lunch, chosen by Executive Head Chef,
Mark Streeter, to reflect the very best seasonal flavours,

dimension to the culinary experience! Lunch is served at 12.30pm
and the speaker will talk afterwards – you’ll be finished by
about 2.30pm – two delicious courses for £24 inclusive of a
glass of wine or two.

5. Murder Mystery Dinner on the
River Dart
This Friday!
Emma from the Royal Castle reports:
Join us for a Murder Mystery Dinner on the River Dart
this Friday evening. You will be
greeted with champagne and canapés on arrival whilst you mingle
with your fellow diners and begin putting together your list of
suspects.
As
we cruise up river our sumptuous 3 course buffet will be served
and, as the evening's events come to a climax, you will have the
opportunity of putting your best Miss Marple theories to the
test by naming the Murderer along with their motive.
The Dartmouth dot TV crew went last
year, and honestly, it was one of the best evenings we have had.
Wine, food, the river, and live theatre all around you, simply
brilliant! We know there are a few tickets left, so call
now and have a great Friday evening. For further details please
contact the Royal Castle Hotel: 01803 833033 To

6. Classic
Channel Regatta

Charles de Brosses reports:
This is a one week championship open to pre-1976 classic yachts
and is based on three legs:
Dartmouth Classics (June 30th & July 1st: two days of racing in
Start Bay off Dartmouth).
Classic Channel Race (July 2nd & 3rd: cross-Channel race from
Dartmouth to Saint-Malo).
Saint-Malo & Guernsey (July 5th, 6th & 7th: inshore race off
Saint-Malo, night passage race from Saint-Malo to Guernsey, and
Classic Round Sark Race).
In Dartmouth we shall, weather permitting, get the yachts to
sail up to the Higher Ferry from their mid-river moorings and
then down past the towns of Dartmouth and Kingswear to the
castles and the start line of the Classic Channel Race at
approximately 2 pm on Monday July 2nd.
Pre-registered yachts are of excellent quality, such as Lutine
or Clarionet, both well known on the 50's and 60's racing scene,
or Sereine, the famous Ecole des Glenans cutter from France, and
even a crew from the New York Yacht Club will be taking part on
the classic 54' USA registered Night Watch.
In the UK it will be covered by our media sponsor Classic Boat,
and also by Yachting World; in France we are expecting coverage
from Chasse-Maree and, we hope, Yachting Classique. Full
information and entries via the website
www.crab.org.uk .
7. Battle
of the wines
James Brown of
Browns Hotel reports:
Battle of the Wines – throughout June.
People love their grape varieties
but often won’t try a new wine region. Over the course of
the year we are going to put together some great wines from
the cheapest to the most expensive and let you decide where
your taste lies. Please let us know if there is a
combination that particularly interests you. We are changing
the format of our wine challenge for the summer months as
people start to drink more white and rosé wines. We will be
promoting individual wines on a weekly basis so come and see
what we have. The first of these will be a chilled red
Valpolicella, full of the flavours of cherry. This wine
works really well as a chilled wine.
We are sticking with our May rosés for another month. Try
the organic, gold medal winning provincial rosé from Chateau
Miravel (also renowned as a recording studio with several
70’s rock bands like Deep Purple!) or our Rosé Sancerre
which is simply the best rosé we have ever tasted!
8.
Contented Continental Cheesemonger

Dartmouth was alive to the smells and sights of its
first Continental Market this weekend. The place
was packed and everyone judged it a great success.
If they will come back again, you really ought to spend
some time here. Remember we have the best
selection of specialist shops here in Dartmouth, have a
