1.   Food Festival  10 - 11 - 12 - 13 - 14 October

The Dartmouth Food Festival is pleased to host the the Rotary Young Chef competition. The competition is open to young people up to the age of 17,and is run nationally, it is run by Rotary in conjunction with Filippo Berio olive oil and Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Restaurant. The objective being to have fun with food, learn something about the world of the chef, develop cookery and food presentation skills, consider healthy eating options, cooking within a budget. In 2006 over 370 young chefs took part in Devon alone. The winner in Dartmouth will go on to a regional competition, with a grand final being held in London in April 2008. This year 6 students have been chosen from Dartmouth Community College, they will each choose a menu and will cook at one of the following top Dartmouth restaurants: Upstairs at the Dolphin, Castle Hotel, Embankment Restaurant, Sails and RB's Diner.  We are delighted that these restaurants have agreed to support the competition. The food will be judged by a distinguished panel of Nigel Way, John Burton-Race and Rob Dawson, at the Food Festival at approx 5pm on Thursday 11th October.

The Festival programme will be enlivened this year with the addition of a clay oven which will be built by
local school children in the 2 weeks before the festival. The clay oven will be used to cook pizzas, bread, meats and vegetables. Serin Aubrey of Anzac Street Bistro aims to roast lamb in hay for the opening party.  A number of restaurants are planning to prove extra bread for the festival.  Festival Chairman James Brown, who has volunteered to make the oven (his second this year!) believes that Travis Perkins will have to start stocking the clay on a regular basis when people see how much fun it is to make and cook in the oven.

Tickets for the opening party are available at Browns Hotel for £25. They are selling fast.  Check out the website by clicking here.

5.     Small News

  • The new Noss Marina development plans are going the rounds (the Flavel tomorrow and Noss Marina on Saturday), if you see an event you should go to it.  There are going to be nearly double the number of boat berths, but they will all be more expensive.  The plans also include about 70 luxury homes costing up to £1M each and some 15 affordable homes.  Ironically with the possibility of creating up to 250 new jobs, there are plans to build up to 100 affordable homes on the far eastern edges of Dartmouth.  It has been suggested that it would more sensible to build them on the Noss side of the river and hence be so much closer to the new jobs.
